This tutorial shows how one can crochet the half double crochet stitch. In crochet patterns, this stitch is mentioned as hdc.
We start with a row of foundation crochet chain.(click for tutorial).
Half double crochet stitch is as tall as 2 chain stitches. So chain 2 to bring the hook to the top of the row. These two chains will be considered the first stitch of the row.
Wrap yarn around the hook.
Pass hook through the chain (usually fourth from the right but depends on the pattern).
Yarn over (wrap yarn around the hook) like shown below.
Pull the wrapped yarn through the chain.
At this point, we will have 3 loops on the hook.
Yarn over again.
Pull through all the 3 loops.
We have now completed our first half double crochet stitch.
To make the next half double crochet stitch, yarn over.
Pass hook through chain.
Pull through the chain.
We will have 3 loops on the hook now. Yarn over and pull through all three of them.
Second stitch is done.
Continue till the end of the row.
We have now reached the end of the row. So let us now learn how to crochet the second row.
For this, we will have to chain 2 to bring the hook to the top of the row. These chains are called the turning chains.
Now turn your work so that the chain is at the right side.
Now we crochet just like we did above. Yarn over.
Pass hook through the braid like chain that is formed at the top of the first row. You can pass through both loops that form the V shape or just the front loop or just the back loop. Each variation will give a slightly different texture to the crocheted fabric.
Yarn over and draw the yarn through the chain.
We have 3 loops on the hook now.
Yarn over and
pull through all 3 loops.
This is how the fabric will look after the completion of 2 rows.
This is the chart for our half double crochet sampler shown above. The standard symbol used for half double crochet in crochet patterns is the English letter T.
