Step by step picture tutorial
If you would prefer a written pattern for this motif, here is a step by step tutorial with pictures.
Start with 5 chains. (chains tutorial here)
Make a circle by joining the first and last chain with a slip stitch.
In the first row, 4 groups of double crochet stitches will be added. Each group will have 3 double crochet stitches.
Once the ring is formed, chain 3 (This is counted as a double crochet stitch). Add two more double crochet stitches right next to the chain. We now have the first group.
Chain 2 and add three more double crochets to form the next group. Repeat this 2 more times.
End with a slip stitch. Change color or continue with the same yarn.
In the second row, we will define the 4 corners of the square. Each corner is formed by 2 groups of double crochet stitches that form a V shape like shown below.
To make this V shape (refer picture above), start with 3 chains (this will be counted as double crochet stitch). Add two more to form a group. Crochet 3 chains followed by another group of 3 double crochets.
Chain 2 and make another V shape in the next corner like shown below.
Complete all four corners and end with a slip stitch.
Corners will have two groups of double crochet stitches. Rest of the spaces will have one group.
This motif is very simple and easy to remember and does not require any chart.
The V shape is clearly visible in the next picture.
You can add as many rows as you want. This is the most common pattern for making square shaped baby receiving blankets.
