Casalguidi stitch is a padded stem stitch that can be used to create texture in surface embroidery. This belongs to the 3D embroidery family and can be used to embroider monograms, tree trunks, raised borders, bouquet ribbons etc. The technique is very similar to the raised stem stitch band. So please visit that tutorial first before continuing.
For padding, you can use yarn / embroidery threads or even some fabric. The padding is first tied to the fabric by couching (link shows a few samples of couching stitch).
I am going to show how to monogram the English letter U using this stitch.
Add another layer of satin stitches to cover the yarn and completely tie it to the fabric.
Next we add the base stitch over which we will add the stem stitches. Keep the tension uniform through out. Don’t make the stitches too tight or too loose. I am using contrasting color for the sake of this demo.
I chose the letter U to show how you can work this in a curve. When worked in a curve, keep the inner stitches closer so that the outer stitches are equidistant.
The stem stitches are stitched exactly like they are done in the raised stem stitch band. Please check that tutorial if you want step by step tutorial for padded stem stitch.
This was around 7 coins tall. 🙂
