This tutorial has step by step pictures showing how you can weave a 3D Moravian star using coconut / palm tree leaf. This pretty 8 point star can also be made with strips of (shiny) color paper and hung as Christmas tree decoration.
Take 4 leaflets and fold them into half.
Group them like shown below. So now we have 2 loops.
Place one loop over the other like shown below. Looks like I forgot to take picture of this step so I had to borrow the image from the fish tutorial. So your loops will have 2 leaflets like mentioned above.
Fold the vertical loop up so it resembles the English letter N.
Weave the horizontal leaf into the loop.
Tighten and you will have a woven square like this.
The backside will look like this.
We want the front and the back to look the same. So start folding the sides like shown below.
Weave the last side.
The square has 8 strips attached to it. Each strip will be made into a sharp pointed cone now.
Fold it at 45 degrees angle so that the strip is horizontal.
Fold again so that it is vertical. This forms a wide triangle at the top.
Fold the triangle into half.
Insert the strip through the loop right below it. We have to make 7 more similar points in the star (4 on each side).
All four points done on this side.
Close up look.
Flip over and add 4 more points on the other side.
There will be a V shaped gap between the two points. This is an indication that you are doing it correctly.
All 8 points are done. Now we have to add the 3D effect in the center.
Fold a strip and insert it into the loop right under it. Keep a finger to guide the shape when pulling the strip.
Closeup view from the side.
This will form a 3D triangle in the center.
Repeat for all 8 strips.
The star will have 4 triangles on each side.
Cut off the excess length.
3D Moravian star ready.
